Chapter Eight
The Light
âWe canât be together, the three of us. Ever,â I said. âIf weâre not together, then they donât have the formula. It wonât be easy for them.â
âTrue,â said George.
âBut first, I need to get out of here.â
âSpeaking to oneâs self is never a good sign,â said a voice from behind us. I swung around. Several hooded figures in dark cloaks blocked the aisle. âItâs been a long wait, Miss Eady.â
A tingle of fear zipped up my spine and lodged at the base of my skull like a massive tumor. The signal for immediate action. âNot long enough.â I spun away and darted up the next aisle, away from the evil that blocked my way like a brick wall. This was not good. Not good at all.
âMiss Eady! This way!â George grabbed the paper from my hand and took the lead for which I was grateful. Whatever further secrets the paper held, we couldnât let these dark witches have.
George knew this place better than anyone. I prayed fervently that he didnât try to lead me through a wall or shelf, causing me to knock myself senseless.
âAfter her!â yelled the voice behind me. âAnd get that paper!â
Footsteps pounded behind me and mingled with the pounding of my heart until they became indistinguishable. I swallowed down the lump of rising panic and ran after George. I fled as fast as I could, barely managing to keep the clerk in my sights. Looking behind me was unnecessary, the sounds of my pursuers all too close. Around one corner and another and another, on and on until I thought my heart would burst inside my chest.
I fervently hoped that the others had already found their way out. Especially Simon. Whoever these people were, they werenât messing around.
Move forward. Just keep moving forward. I splashed through puddle after puddle, each one becoming deeper, colder. At the back of my mind, I realized that darkness was also closing in. I chanced a glance behind me. The hooded figures were no longer there. In fact, we had left the files and records room behind, and had entered what appeared to be underground bunkers, cave-like with tunnels running every which way.
I slowed, gasping for breath.
âDonât stop, Miss Eady,â said George, backtracking to urge me along.
âIââ pant, pantâ âjust need a minute to breathe.â I sucked in air, noting the thickness of it. âI think weâve lost them.â
âCome along. Please.â The clerkâs tone became urgent as he tried to tug on my arm. âWe are almost there. But we must hurry.â I followed numbly now. One turn, another turn and another, until the floor became dryer. A pinprick of light appeared at the end of a long corridor. A spark of light was all I needed. I dashed up the tunnel toward the light like it was the tunnel to heaven.
Freedom was within reach.
Until it wasnât.
A massive black shadow inserted itself between me and escape. I didnât even try to stop. I plunged into it. Several pairs of arms grabbed me, like a massive spider trapping its prey.
